Welcome to the CUWS website
CUWS is the amateur radio society for students and staff of Cambridge and Anglia Ruskin Universities. The society has held the callsign G6UW since 1932, and it can be heard on the air regularly from our well-equipped station just outside Cambridge. The 'shack' has antennas for most HF bands as well as VHF and UHF equipment for amateur satellite operation, and is available for use by members at any time. The society organizes frequent DXpeditions with a particular emphasis on the RSGB's Islands on the Air programme, takes part in the major international contests and organizes occasional talks and trips on radio-related themes. We also offer the opportunity to take the amateur radio licence exams to all, regardless of affiliation to the University. CUWS was founded in October 1920, with the first entry in the club's account book on 20 October and the first meeting held on 31 October. The society counts a number of influential physicists and engineers among its past and current members including Sir Ernest Rutherford, JB Gunn and Sir Maurice Wilkes.
